 Gilbert Getting Wireless Network.
Mar. 10, 2006
David van den Berg - The Arizona Republic
Wireless Internet access will be available across Gilbert by the end of the year.
The Town Council approved an agreement Wednesday night with NeoReach, a Tempe-based subsidiary of Maryland-based MobilePro, for construction of a wireless network that will cover the town.
NeoReach will start deployment of the wireless network June 1, after a study is done to determine the best locations for the 700-800 nodes that will be needed, said Karrie Rockwell, the company's director of business development and public relations.
Gilbert is the seventh city in America to choose MobilePro or one of its subsidiaries to develop its wireless network.
When Gilbert's network is finished, it will be a part of the largest border-to-border wireless data network in the country.
NeoReach completed an outdoor roaming network in Tempe in February and is constructing one in Chandler. Any user will be able to roam seamlessly throughout the 187-square-mile network in the three communities, according to a company press release.
"This is a gift being dropped on your doorstep," Dave Heck, deputy manager of information technology for Tempe, told the Gilbert council at the meeting.
The only cost Gilbert will face for the new wireless network is electricity costs, which should amount to $15,000 to $20,000 a year. As part of the agreement, the town will be able to connect up to 3,000 devices, such as laptops for police officers or traffic cameras, to the network at any one time at no cost.
For computer users who are not town employees, there will be areas in Gilbert where a limited amount of free access will be offered. Free access to the municipal Web sites for Gilbert, Chandler and Tempe, as well as sites of Arizona State University and Maricopa community colleges, will be available around the clock.
NeoReach will offer monthly subscriptions for $29 a month. Most users in homes and businesses will need to purchase a wireless bridge, a device similar to a cable or DSL modem, to access the network indoors.
The council approved the deal unanimously.
Two representatives of Wydebeam Broadband, a Mesa company, raised concerns about the agreement during the meeting.
Patrick Millette and Jeff Balda, owners of Wydebeam Broadband, said they are worried about NeoReach's network causing their Internet customers to lose their service.
"Gilbert just wanted to follow the lead of Tempe and just do a me-too thing," Millette said.
